It's hard to think of an easier make-ahead Christmas morning breakfast than this Christmas Strata. The beautiful thing about strata, besides the taste, is that you can really add whatever you want to it! The most important part is the bread to egg ratio... and the rest you can do whatever you like! Here is our go-to recipe that children from two to ninety-two always enjoy!
Ingredients
1/2 cup red onion, chopped
1 cup mushrooms, sliced
2 cups spinach leaves
1 medium tomato, diced 10 eggs 2 cups whole milk
2 cups heavy cream 1 tsp dry mustard 1 cup grated gruyere cheese 1 cup grated cheddar cheese 1 loaf French bread, torn into pieces
Instructions
Grease a 9x13 pan. In a large skillet, sauté onion for 2 minutes. Add mushrooms and cook for another 4 minutes and set aside.
In a large bowl, whisk eggs for 1–2 minutes. Whisk in heavy cream for another 1-2 minutes until fluffier. Whisk in milk, mustard, salt, and pepper. Stir in sautéd vegetables, cheese, and spinach. Lastly, fold in the torn bread.
Pour entire mixture into the prepared pan and cover with foil. Refrigerate for at least 6 hours (up to 24 hours).
Preheat oven to 400ºF. Bake strata for 1 hour or until golden, puffed, and set in the center. Remove from oven and let rest for 5 minutes before serving. Enjoy!
