"Valentine's Day in our house was never complete without a plate of these delicious brownie-like cookies. Covered in rich chocolate ganache with a sweet maraschino cherry surprise in the middle, it was a special treat I always looked forward to as a kid." - Brittany
Chocolate Cherry Cookies Recipe
Makes roughly 2 dozen
1 1/2 cups all-purpose flour
1/2 cup unsweetened cocoa powder
1/4 teaspoon salt
1/4 teaspoon baking soda
1/4 teaspoon baking powder
1/2 cup margarine
1 1/4 cup granulated sugar
1 large egg
2 heaping tablespoons full fat sour cream
2 teaspoons vanilla
1 jar maraschino cherries (10 ounces)
1 cup semisweet or dark chocolate chips ( I prefer Ghirardelli)
1/2 cup sweetened condensed milk
1/4 cup milk
2 tablespoons juice from cherry jar
Directions:
Heat oven to 350 degrees
In a large mixing bowl, combine the flour, cocoa, salt, baking powder and soda and blending together. In a separate mixing bowl, beat together margarine and sugar on low until fluffy. Beat in the egg, vanilla, and sour cream until well blended. Gradually add dry ingredients to dough mix; beat until smooth.
Roll dough into 1-inch balls; place on ungreased baking sheet. Make a thumb print in each ball of dough.
Place one cherry in the center indention of each cookie. Set cookies aside.
In small saucepan heat chocolate chips and sweetened condensed milk on low until chocolate is melted. Be careful not to burn the chocolate. Stir the chocolate and condensed milk until well blended. Stir in 2 tablespoons cherry juice from jar. Stir in the milk until well blended. Add more milk if needed to sauce if it seems too thick. Spoon (1 tablespoon or so) of chocolate sauce over each cherry, spreading to cover cherry and indention.
Bake cookies at 350° for exactly 10 minutes. Remove to wire rack to cool. Enjoy!
Tips
- Don't like cherries? Omit the cherry completely and follow recipe accordingly.
- Drizzle white chocolate and add red, pink, and white sprinkles for a more festive Valentine's Day look!
