Charcuterie Inspiration

There are few things we love more than charcuterie boards at Wheat Home & Hospitality! A charcuterie is so versatile and can be made as simple or extravagant as the occasion calls for. What makes charcuterie so easy is that you usually have over half the ingredients on hand! The basic flavor components of a good board are sweet, savory, salty, and sometimes spicy.

Charcuterie is perfect for any meal or gathering because it is so simple to alter the flavor profiles to what you need. For a morning breakfast charcuterie, we tend to go heavy on the savory and sweet. For an afternoon meeting, a heavier approach on the salty and savory profiles is typical. It’s really up to your own personal taste, and we are here to share a few rules we like to follow to build our boards.

Begin with a beautiful board that has color, height, and texture. Adding a variety of bowls helps complete the look of having a bountiful board. We grab our bowls and place around the board first building the overall structure. Next we add our cheeses and meats - the anchors of our board. Then we just fill in and around our cheeses and bowls leaving no gaps. We love mixing in seasonal candies, cookies, nuts, etc. for a more traditional board. Little changes like crackers or nuts each time always keeps your board tasting fresh and looking impressive.

The beautiful Fall charcuterie board pictured above was put together with product from Trader Joes! You probably have similar product already in your pantry and fridge saving you money!

Easy Steps to Building Charcuterie

  1. Place all jams, preserves, mustards, or dips into small bowls or shallow dishes and place on the board.

  2. Add meats and cheese, placing larger items like sliced meats and blocks or slices of cheese on the board first.

  3. Add crackers and or bread next, spacing them out on the board,.

  4. Fill in gaps on your board with fresh and/or dried fruit.

  5. Add garnish and serve immediately or chill until ready to serve.
